Passignano, situated on the shore of Lake Trasimeno, is always kissed by the sun (289 mt. a.s.l.).
The village was founded by the Umbrians and was also settled by the Etruscans and the Romans.
As a matter of fact the Latin origin of the name means “Passage Place” or “Janus’ Pass” Circled by mediaeval walls, it is characterized by a maze of small streets which start from the lake up to the wonderful towers of the castle above. This “Rocca” (citadel) was built after the 10th century but a part of it was destroyed in the17th century to fortify the road connecting Perugia to Florence.
Passignano is also the center of the first flying school for seaplanes of the Regio Italian Army. It has always been a very important center with many taverns and monuments. Sights to see: besides the “Rocca” (citadel), we recommend the Romanesque Church of S.Vito with a painting of Fiorenzo di Lorenzo and the very near Castel Rigone founded by Rigone himself, who was one of the Totila‘s lieutenants; the latter was the king of the Goths.
