Legend has it that this beautiful town was founded in a place indicated by an eagle, which later became its symbol.

It was built by the Etruscans on the left side of the Tiber River on a hilltop dominating all the surrounding territory. The town became important during Roman Times. During Medieval Times it reached its greatest fame. Todi is the town of one of the most renowned Franciscan poets of the 13th century, Jacopone da Todi, who is buried in the Church of Saint Fortunato. The town has one of the most beautiful squares of the central Italy, including the following palaces: “palazzo del popolo” (The People’s Palace), “palazzo del capitano” (The Captain’s Palace), and “palazzo dei priori”, (The Priors’ Palace); there is also a marvelous Cathedral dating back to the 12th century with gorgeous steps. Do not miss the Church of the Consolazione, which was probably designed by Bramante. Todi has one of the most important Summer events of the region, the Todi Art Festival.
