Located along the Flaminia Road, this village the called Spoletium by the ancient Romans, whose presence is evident thanks to the many monuments such as temples, theatres and arches.
From the 6th century A.C., under the Longobard dominion, it became the main town of the Dukedom of Spoleto; at that time it was the most important town of Central Italy. After the defeat by Federico Barbarossa, it fell under the Papal authority and despite many inside conflicts, Spoleto always kept an important historical function for all the region. Today the town is the seat of the “Festival dei Due Mondi” (Two Worlds Festival), a very important cultural and artistic event. Sights to see: besides the splendid Duomo, there is the bridge with ten arches which connects Monteluco and the Albornoz “Rocca” (citadel). This citadel was built in the 14th century by Gattapone and hosted very important persons such as Lucrezia Borgia and her brother known as“Valentino”.
